Modern Heritage
Solid traditional bones, but no design — until now.
About
This home had great potential, but nothing to show for it: builder-basic paint throughout, no moldings or built-ins, and lighting that missed the mark. Working with existing furniture to keep the budget focused, we transformed the space with a palette of neutralized green paint colors, a statement fireplace and molding wall, new drapery, and an entirely new lighting plan. The result: a home with warmth, character, and traditional charm — Modern Heritage at its best.

The base color for the walls is Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, which was painted when the house was built in early 2019. I selected several neutralized green accent colors from the same color palette to run through public areas of the home. They are all by Sherwin Williams: Pewter Green, Retreat, Acacia Haze, Oyster Bay. In the private areas of the home, we stuck with neutralized color, but played with slate blues, sages and teals.

The ceilings in the great room are 12 foot high. So we wanted to take advantage of the space and created a beautiful traditional fireplace wall. The central point of the fireplace is accented with a marble tile surround, crown molding inspired mantle, and was painted a creamy white. Instead of adding bookshelves on either side, We added box moldings with brass sconces, and painted everything Sherwin-Williams Retreat, including the doors that were also on that wall.

All of the original lighting needed to be replaced because none of it had any cohesiveness to it, and it was not in the correct scale for the spaces. We added three beautiful glass and brass oversized pendants to the island. We added a linear chandelier with brass candlesticks and a bronze bar to match the kitchen cabinet hardware over the dining table. We kept the existing ceiling fans. These light fixtures, lean more towards a heritage antique style, even though they’re reproductions.

This house already has a large casual dining room area plus an oversized island in the kitchen. There is also a space outside for our dining, so we did not think that the formal dining room was necessary. Therefore, the formal dining room was converted into a library. We changed out the chandelier for a fabric shaded pendant that is hangs closer to the ceiling. The walls and ceiling were painted Sherwin-Williams Retreat, which gave it that color drenched feeling without painting the window and baseboard moldings, since this room is open to other areas of the home without doors. We added a set of traditional wood bookshelves full of books, a pretty display cabinet in the nook that was meant for a wine fridge, and three super comfy chairs, where we enjoy our coffee every morning.

The exterior of this home was a faded chocolate brown, and had to go! A new lighter paint scheme was selected to complement the stone and tile roof. The landscape beds were reconfigured to better fit the scale of the yard and the front elevation of the home. And new furniture, rugs, striped umbrellas, and potted plants and trees were added to the back lanai to give it a resort living feel.
